Introduction
“... it’s not just the best animated film to ever come out of Walt Disney Studios, but it is also the finest animated motion picture, period.”
-Sara Fetters
(MovieFreak.com, 2024)
Sleeping Beauty (1959) has been looked at retrospectively by critics as being one of the greatest animated films of all time, praising its artistry, direction, and ambition. The film however, didn’t have this type of reaction when it first came out, as it underperformed at the box office, and those felt it prioritized too much stylization over character and story.
The film’s most remarkable innovations from its production includes, but is not limited to: the outstanding art direction by Eyvind Earle, the high standard set by its hand-drawn animation, and the methodical approach for its supporting characters to help drive narrative forward.

Eyvind Earle, the art director, who worked in gouache and acrylics, looked at medieval and gothic art, particularly, Très Riches Heures de Jean, Duc de Berri as inspiration for the film’s colors and designs. The Unicorn Tapestries that were first introduced by John Hench, were also important inspirations for the look of the film.
Walt Disney felt that integrating animation in their past films also took away from the expressiveness from Mary Blair’s original paintings, such as in Alice In Wonderland (1951). Walt therefore placed Eyvind Earle in charge of the film’s art direction with the goal of trying to obtain a greater unity of artistic elements without any animation aspects overpowering the original art.

The combination of Earle’s geometric/organic shapes and painterly textures were all key in making the film larger in terms of artistry, demonstrating a wider range of muted colors to enhance greater perspective and atmospheric realism..
However, Sleeping Beauty needed a lot more color tones and textures for matching the dark grit found in its source (Perrault’s narrative and Grimm’s tale). This encouraged leaning more on the medieval/gothic and its hand-painted realism. Cinderella (1950) focused less on texture and mostly on the ethereal qualities of architectural designs from Rococo art. Color in Alice In Wonderland leaned more on early 20th century European surrealism, consisting of distorted albeit simpler shapes for the disorienting look of the dream world. Alice using a more structured geometric form would’ve meant that the dream world in Alice would’ve otherwise been too neat, structured, and organized. Too much texture in Cinderella would’ve blended less with its low-stakes tale on emotional resilience.
Storytelling: Flat Characters
While critics complained about the film’s flat characters, one could argue that the decision for Aurora and Prince Phillip to have a limited agency was methodical, especially given the princess archetype that had been recently solidified with Cinderella (1950).
The flat characters in Sleeping Beauty function like symbols, providing greater emphasis on the film’s style and design. They enhance each painterly frame as opposed to adding extra character decision-making that may otherwise be seen as occasional detours from the overarching plot’s progression. This flatness gives the antagonist Maleficent and the three fairies greater agency as demonstrated by their magical abilities of flight, levitation, transformation, and transportation. Their actions help with cohesively tying together the story both thematically and emotionally.
Cinderella, similar to Aurora, is greatly affected by external influence but the surrounding action by Cinderella’s supporting characters don’t have as much control and dynamic power over the story. For example, Merryweather casting the sleeping spell to protect Aurora from Maleficent’s spindle spell is the major kickoff. The Fairy Godmother in Cinderella however, appears in one scene and casts a dress spell with limited opposition. If the Fairy Godmother showed up in more than once scene or had a similar sidekick that argued with her over a dress color (similar to how the two of fairies do in Sleeping Beauty), it may have added more nuance to the theme of beauty leading to conflict rather than emphasizing this with only just the aunt and stepsisters.
The three fairies are overall, more dynamic with their magic that can ultimately be seen as a device for influencing outcomes. This makes the beats in Sleeping Beauty far more interesting and also better mirrors the magical world they inhabit.
Then again, Cinderella is a low-stakes romance about emotional resilience “in the face of familial abuse” whereas Sleeping Beauty is a high-stakes romance, containing more action influenced by magic with the consequence of Aurora possibly getting killed (Siede, C. 2025).
Animation and Character Expression

This isn’t to say that the flatness of Aurora and Phillip from Sleeping Beauty created a lesser emotional experience than Cinderella’s. Expanding from the previous point—Maleficent, the other supporting character with greater agency, leads in terms of emotional intensity and provides subtext with the wide range of emotions she expresses.
Movements presented in Maleficent’s facial expressions had us easily identify emotions of happiness and disgust whereas The Black Cauldron (1985), another dark fantasy by Disney, featured an antagonist that lacked them. Maleficent and The Horned King’s plans were both key in tying together themes of their individual stories. However, Maleficent connected characters better on an emotional level.
Expression And Supporting Character
Without any skin or facial muscles on the face, we are limited to the stiffer expressions and less stretching of proportions as a result of the Horned King’s skull. Given the limited range of expression, the audience had a greater challenge in relating to and finding appeal in The Horned King’s presence. The Horned King is also surrounded by cartoonish animals/creatures like Gurgi and Hen Wen, which was tricky for maintaining a tonal balance with his dark anger adjacent to this.

Maleficent, however, had the benefit of being surrounded by mostly human characters, which provided more room for deeper subtext. There is an example scene of her trapping Prince Philip and while smiling, makes the emphatic remark “I set my trap for a peasant and lo, I catch a Prince!” and then laughs. This adds more dimension, hinting at a possessiveness being tied to her enjoyment of cruelty.
Nevertheless, The Black Cauldron doesn’t use down-the-middle character contrast elevated by visuals like Sleeping Beauty does. Inspired by Tolkien, it takes the route that many high-fantasy epics do by prioritizing more world-showing, displaying many fantasy races and increased subplots that may distort a clearer focus on character-relationship dynamics. Aurora and Maleficent, however, are designed to be opposites by sheer design with a range of contrasting light/dark values, mirroring human expressions, and distinguishable actions that add dramatic depth between them. Additionally, how each domain projects dynamic lighting and color onto them makes it more easily decipherable, poetic, and tonally rhythmic. Whereas the Black Cauldron’s plot often meanders in ways that don't feel adjacent to the overarching plot and its world is tainted by a murkier atmosphere.

“One reason for the richness of ornate detail in the movie… is that the movie was made in Technirama… You have to fill that big screen completely.”
-Wolfgang Reitherman, Director,
(New York Times, 1979)
Sleeping Beauty, the first animated film to be shot using the Super Technirama 70 widescreen process, offered more arrangements for a greater visual spectacle. The ratio was 2.55:1, using a specialized 35mm process to be blown up on 70mm film.
The combined layers of design and color makes the singing moments feel secondary when Aurora and Phillip are seen dancing in a dimly lit setting, such as the “Once Upon a Dream” sequence. This widescreen format guides our eyes better around the arrangements of painterly textures and angular, geometric shapes.
Cinderella, however, had a 1.37:1 format, providing more emotional focus on the characters and possibly being less overwhelmed by the art. But, Sleeping Beauty’s widescreen was decided on for a greater immersiveness with the world, making the setting feel like an individual character.
Conclusion

The contemporary film Wish (2023) was inspired by Sleeping Beauty, being presented in the same 2.55:1 widescreen ratio, a format that hasn’t been exercised enough with CG. The film incorporates watercolor painting style for getting a more organically rendered look. Though reception was mixed, the film was praised for its artistic innovation.
This emphasizes how innovation can be a means of pushing mediums forward and meanwhile rejecting norms, even amidst a rise of change like Disney had in the 50s. Sleeping Beauty will continue to be remembered as an achievement in the studio’s canon for reaching a high point in hand-drawn artistry, offering outstanding artistic ideas that will continue to be influential in animation today.
