Subsurface Scattering

The stuff that happens within the object.

reflect off of particles inside that surface.
light bounces around inside the object.

Surface v.s. subsurface

when it comes out it feels like a generalized light gradient

4 types of subsurface scattering

high density subsurface scattering - very little color in cast shadow; very slight shift in the color of form shadow
low desnity subsurface scattering - some light to pass through
stronger light spreads throughout in the cast shadow
end up with a gradient
glassy subsurface scattering
-caustic effect or not as much concentrated
- turn down opacity of light on the surface
-increase in the amount of specular
variable desnity - denser - changes in glassiness of the object
*screen layers painted on top (in chiu's tutorial)
SUBSURFACE EFFECTS IN DIGITAL PAINTING: add lighten or screen as a additive layerotherwise it won't look correct
effect additive layer for metal: color dodge
you can have variants of all 4 subsurface scattering objects
